Donation from local Waitrose in March 2012

Waitrose presented a cheque for £160 following support from the people of Jesmond through their token scheme. We were delighted and put this towards the new entrance.

Productive Afternoon with Help from SCAN Volunteers in March 2012

6 volunteers from SCAN got stuck in at the orchard on the afternoon of 14 March. Sarah, Maria and Finola worked really hard and enjoyed being outside instead of on their computers. The sun shone, a robin sang and the almond blossom was out. At the end of the day Sarah said she would try and organise a picnic for students on the orchard later on.

Art Installation in March 2012

The committee members worked with local artist Julia Barton to add creative features, in particular, a gentle metal archway which echos the trees marking the entrance to the orchard and lettering attached to the wall pillar.

The holes for the entrance metal frame were prepared at the beginning of March, and the crab apple tree, Malus 'Red Sentinel', to be pleached against the frame was measured and was the perfect size.

The new entrance and pillar lettering was installed on 26 March with artist Julia Barton and blacksmith John Rutherford, as well as some orchard volunteers. It was such a hot day that all needed a drink, but unfortunately there was only coffee to celebrate with! It was a wonderful day and a great achievement. As the trees develop the entrance would look stunning.

Part of Jesmond Community Festival in April 2012

We took part in this year's community celebrations by walking in the festival parade and with a stall at the grand fair, as well as with craft activities of the family fun day at the orchard.

Wet and windy weather could not deter the hardy souls from weaving a living & growing willow bower, a new edition to the orchard.

Eco Day in May 2012

In late May we entertained children from Year 1 at West Jesmond Primary School to an Eco Day with insect zoo, seed planting and stories.

Runner-up for Community Spirit Award in May 2012

The Orchard was shortlisted for a Community Spirit Award by Your Homes Newcastle - we came runner up! There's a short video clip on their website where you can also see the other nominees - all excellent projects. For a link to the website, click here:

Annual Meeting in June 2012

The Annual Meeting for the Orchard took place on 26 June at Haldane House. There was an illustrated review of the events of the past year and discussion of what should be considered next. The Orchard now boasts 33 trees plus a walnut tree planted in the cemetery - and we have been looking enviously at the empty wall stretching towards West Jesmond Primary School's outdoor classroom!
