Wassailing 2017 1

Wassailing Event 2017

We held this year's Wassailing Event at the Orchard on Friday 6th January. Unfortunately, because of the damp weather, the children from West Jesmond School did not join us but there were enough of us to toast the fruit trees. Jesmond Sings led the singing of two traditional wassailing songs and our Green Man had a (not so) quiet word with the trees. Let's hope it works and we get another great crop of fruit this year.

Pruning Course 2017 3

Pruning Course on Saturday 11th February

We don't have much luck with the weather for these courses. Even worse than last year really! But we had more hardy souls prepared to prune our apple and pear trees, and practice their skills.

Two more Grafting Courses in February & March

We held two more Grafting Courses this year, one in the Holy Name Parish Centre and the other in the Ouseburn Parks Visitor Centre. Everyone seemed to have fun and hopefully all the trees are doing well.

wjp grafting 2017 2

Working with West Jesmond Primary pupils

We had a couple of brilliant days with pupils from West Jesmond Primary School. Year 4 learned about how trees grow and how to graft fruit trees and Year 5 planted some of the trees they grafted last year into the ground and some into pots. The potted trees have been offered for sale to parents and then the general public.

Two pupils from Northern Counties have been providing regular assistance in the Orchard. They have weeded, mowed the grass and helped to keep the willow bower neat. Much appreciated help. Keep up the good work...
