Wassailing 2018 4

Wassailing Event 2018

We held this year's Wassailing Event at the Orchard on Saturday 6th January. The sun shone, the Green Man saluted the trees, the musicians played and Jesmond Sings led the singing of traditional wassailing songs and we were all merry. Let's hope it works and we get another great crop of fruit this year.

Some of our members visited Lanchester Community Orchard Wassailing event and had a great time.

Pruning Course 2018

Pruning Course on Saturday 3rd February

We had a good turnout for this course on a very cold day. Everyone was enthusiastic and sociable and we shared knowledge and pruned the apple and pear trees in the Orchard. We were all grateful for the hot drinks and cake.

Grafting Course 2018 1

Two more Grafting Courses in February & March

We held two more Grafting Courses this year, one in the Holy Name Parish Centre and the other in the Ouseburn Parks Visitor Centre. People came from across the region and lots of issues were discussed and experience shared. And everyone went away with at least two grafted fruit trees. We hope they all do well.

Festival Open Day 2018 5

Jesmond Community Festival Events in the Orchard

This year, the Festival included Italian Poetry in the Orchard and the Orchard's own Open Day. Both took place in glorious weather and were really successful. The Open Day included crafts and games for the children. Snail races and crossbow challenge were both popular. Thanks to Yasmin for the cakes and to Klair for face-painting.

Burst pipe 3

Broken Water Pipe

In July, we found a rather soggy Orchard and, because the burst pipe which was causing this needed replacing, this didn't happen until September. But some trees benefitted from watering during our hot summer!

Carving 1

Our new Orchard Artwork

Some of David's lovely stone carvings, which he has now put in place in the Orchard. These were partially created by children and adults at our Open Day in May, and completed by David Pretswell as a permanent artwork and illustration of some of our wildlife.

Because Saturday was forecast to be stormy, Apple Day was swapped to Sunday 14 October and the Venue was changed to the Royal British Legion. All the usual activities took place and everyone had lots of fun.
